Do you have your own economist?
Do you have your own economist? GPFA Members had the opportunity to meet with the OPERS in-house Economist, Nick Kotsonis, CFA and we came away with a deeper understanding and perspective on what is driving the U.S. economy today and what the research supports for future predictions. Having access to this global network of sophisticated asset owner buy-side institutions, allows our GPFA members to broaden their views on the market and learn from one another. Thank you to Jerry May, from OPERS for arranging this educational opportunity and thank you to Nick Kotsonis, CFA for sharing your personal views and research on the economy.

2024 GPFA Annual Meeting concludes
Two quotes that capture the success of this week and the growth of this Association better than anything we would say…
“GPFA has opened our eyes to what’s possible in this industry.”
“GPFA’s Annual Meeting has become the professional highlight of my year.”
Creating value for our global beneficial owner community is the reason we exist. An Association for beneficial owners, by beneficial owners. We have long said that when beneficial owners come together to network, learn, and engage with one another, our entire industry progresses. We are better together and this week was proof of that.
Thank you to our members that travelled from far to attend this year’s meeting. Thank you to our GPFA Board and Leadership team for volunteering your time to make this event possible. Thank you to our speakers and presenters for opening our eyes and minds to new information.
And a huge thank you again to the entire team at Pacific Life for graciously hosting our group this week. We loved our time at your headquarters in Newport Beach!
Keeping current on regulatory changes
Regulatory changes continue to impact securities finance and keeping current on these issues requires expert guidance. GPFA is fortunate to have Trevor Noronha from HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan) leading our Legal and Regulatory working group. During our Annual Meeting this week, Trevor and one of our Board of Directors, Lisa Mantello from Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP were joined by Miki Navazio from Seward & Kissel LLP to provide an educational session on some of the most relevant regulatory changes facing our marketplace. Thank you all for making time for our global beneficial owner members.
Annual Meeting Keynote Speakers talk geopolitical landscape
Understanding the geopolitical landscape is crucial to navigating the global capital markets. Our keynote speakers expertly walked us through the global conflict regions and left us with much to consider and debate. Thank you to General Michael Groen, General James Spider Marks, and Seth Rosenthal from Academy Securities and Academy Asset Management. We appreciate the time you gave to our global institutional investor members and we thank you for your years of service and commitment to educating groups like ours. Thank you to Pacific Life and Lance Doherty for connecting us to the team!
GPFA talks AI
How are you using AI in your daily life? How is your organization using AI in your business? With the evolution of technology and the impacts to human life spans, how will the investment world need to adapt to meet the needs of beneficial owners over time? So many questions. So much to discuss. Thank you Ajay Singh, Ph.D. from HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan) and Jim Breen from Pacific Life for guiding us through the future vision of the use of artificial intelligence in the investment world.
Beneficial Owners turn up for one another
Beneficial owners turn up for one another. Four years in and this global asset owner association of nearly 40 members, representing a combined asset base of nearly $14 trillion, showed up today with a common interest to support the health and transparency of our marketplace. Today was a great day and tomorrow should be even better, together. Thank you to Pacific Life for the tremendous hospitality. We are excited to continue the momentum!
Let the GPFA Annual Member Meeting Begin!
The stage is set. Let the meeting begin. The team at Pacific Life has set the bar high this year!

GPFA closed-door meeting at ISLA Presentation
Education, knowledge sharing, and debate are what drive value for our buyside members engaged in the securities financing markets. In our most recent closed-door beneficial owner meeting held in partnership with the International Securities Lending Association (ISLA) at their recent conference in Geneva, Mark Faulkner was invited to speak on the likely implications of the Basel 3 Endgame. In many instances there are still more questions than answers as to how the implementation of these global regulations will apply across the securities financing market, but what is clear is the business of general collateral trading to support broad market liquidity will change. We welcome more education and debate on this topic as the regulation and market impacts continue to unfold. Thank you Mark Faulkner for sharing your viewpoints with this buyside community.
GPFA Goes to ISLA
Cross-collaboration, advocacy, regulatory engagement, market standardization, member education, and best practice development. These Associations lead in all these ways and more. Our Global Peer Financing Association (GPFA) Chairperson, Robert Goobie CPA CMA, had the pleasure to join the CEOs of International Securities Lending Association (ISLA), ISDA, ICMA - International Capital Market Association, and AIMA - The Alternative Investment Management Association yesterday in Geneva for a wide ranging discussion of the global financing markets and how the members of these Associations interact to support trading and liquidity across the global capital markets. Thank you to Andrew Dyson and the team from International Securities Lending Association (ISLA) for including GPFA. Ina Budh-Raja, Chair of the ISLA Board superbly moderated this important discussion. It was great to get to know Scott O'Malia, Jack Inglis, and Bryan Pascoe and learn more about your respective markets and Association priorities. Thank you for such an engaging conversation. We look forward to connecting more in the future.
