Creating value for our global beneficial owner community is the reason we exist. An Association for beneficial owners, by beneficial owners. We have long said that when beneficial owners come together to network, learn, and engage with one another, our entire industry progresses. We are better together and this week was proof of that.

Regulatory changes continue to impact securities finance and keeping current on these issues requires expert guidance. GPFA is fortunate to have Trevor Noronha from HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan) leading our Legal and Regulatory working group. During our Annual Meeting this week, Trevor and one of our Board of Directors, Lisa Mantello from Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP were joined by Miki Navazio from Seward & Kissel LLP to provide an educational session on some of the most relevant regulatory changes facing our marketplace. Thank you all for making time for our global beneficial owner members.

Understanding the geopolitical landscape is crucial to navigating the global capital markets. Our keynote speakers expertly walked us through the global conflict regions and left us with much to consider and debate. Thank you to General Michael Groen, General James Spider Marks, and Seth Rosenthal from Academy Securities and Academy Asset Management. We appreciate the time you gave to our global institutional investor members and we thank you for your years of service and commitment to educating groups like ours. With the evolution of technology and the impacts to human life spans, how will the investment world need to adapt to meet the needs of beneficial owners over time? So many questions. So much to discuss. Beneficial owners turn up for one another. Four years in and this global asset owner association of nearly 40 members, representing a combined asset base of nearly $14 trillion, showed up today with a common interest to support the health and transparency of our marketplace. Today was a great day and tomorrow should be even better, together. Thank you to Pacific Life for the tremendous hospitality. We are excited to continue the momentum!

Our Global Peer Financing Association (GPFA) Chairperson, Robert Goobie CPA CMA, had the pleasure to join the CEOs of International Securities Lending Association (ISLA), ISDA, ICMA - International Capital Market Association, and AIMA - The Alternative Investment Management Association yesterday in Geneva for a wide ranging discussion of the global financing markets and how the members of these Associations interact to support trading and liquidity across the global capital markets. Ina Budh-Raja, Chair of the ISLA Board superbly moderated this important discussion. GPFA has once again partnered with the International Securities Lending Association (ISLA) to run a dedicated beneficial owner meeting during the conference. This Beneficial Owner session will take place on Tuesday, 18 June from 9AM-12PM and is for registered beneficial owners attending the conference. This half day session will be led by GPFA members Alexander Scott Baker from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Morten Gevoll from Norges Bank Investment Management and will focus on the specific challenges and opportunities facing beneficial owners in today’s market. Key discussion topics include T+1 settlement, Basel endgame, cybersecurity threats, routes to market and digitalization in the investment industry. We look forward to connecting with you then!

We are better together. When global beneficial owners learn from one another and discuss best practices, the entire market grows and evolves. And when beneficial owners engage directly with bank participants, we move forward even further.
